Democrat Kaine and Republican Kilgore support the repeal
Estate Taxes:
Bill may not survive session Efforts to abolish Virginia's estate tax appear on hold this year, even though a bill that would end the levy was passed Monday by the House Finance Committee. Backers of HB1490 are confident there is majority support in the House and Senate for the repeal but doubtful they can muster a two-thirds vote needed in each chamber to override a threatened veto by Gov. Mark R. Warner. The governor, who vetoed a similar bill in 2003, has voiced concern the lawmakers have not identified a way to replace about $120 million a year in revenues that would be lost with the death of the tax. Warner's term expires in January, however, and the major two candidates seeking to replace him - Democrat Timothy M. Kaine and Republican Jerry W. Kilgore - support the repeal.
